OUTDOOR SKATING RINK

Philip William Hickey
Yep, we had one. I don’t mean the wading pool constructed, I believe, by Chet Preisser.

According to legend reported in Mrs. Fetter’s book, children such as Virginia Shafroth Newton, Henry Toll, and Charles Gates Jr. “dug trenches, pits, and recess, tunneling so far underground that alarmed teachers, fearing cave-ins called a halt.”

Yet, some creative Graland students, perhaps the above-named students, had more on their minds: an outdoor ice rink. “Students helped to build an outdoor ice rink where the Humphreys Building now stands, but the warm weather often made skating impractical. Apparently, no one wanted to get up at midnight to flood or spray the rink.”
