MASTER TEACHER: LUDMILA GLASSCOCK (1960-1994)
I first met Ludmila Glasscock at an evening meeting of the life education teachers at the school.
I first met Ludmila Glasscock at an evening meeting of the life education teachers at the school. Somehow, this meeting was part of my schedule during a visit as a candidate for an English position at the school-- a grueling day of answering questions from so many people I lost count; it ended with a meeting overseen by Dr. Sam Wagonfeld, a Graland parent and a consultant to the life ed. teachers. I sat, remained silent, and gazed at the people around the room. One lady, caught my attention, for her comments were articulated in such a way I wanted to listen to her. Her name was Ludmila Glasscock. Our friendship was one based on a love of murder mysteries, a genre I have loved since high school. In addition, I became her Saturday standardized testing buddy; in her honor, I am still an ISEE and SSATB proctor.
Jennie Kurtz, our former Director of Admissions, wrote these lovely thoughts on Ludmila and delivered them at the first Master Teacher’s reception in 1998:
“Ludmila could disarm the most anxious of children and comfort the most concerned parent. Her generous spirit was such that she was never quick to judge; she patiently listened and became a confidant of many. She began her career at Graland as a first-grade teacher, and in 1965 accepted the position as Head of the Lower School( then, called the Primary School). In 1972, she became Director of Testing. In
