MASTER TEACHER: BETTY VOSBURGH BRAYSHAW (1945-1977)
Mrs. Brayshaw’s obituary states that she “was an innovative pre-kindergarten teacher at Graland Country Day School, Denver, Colorado. She started the program for four-year-olds at that school when there was no such pre-kindergarten program anywhere in Colorado.” I suspect she was one of the great ones that Georgia Nelson hired and nurtured.
Certainly, Lu Hiatt’s praise for Mrs. Brayshaw will not surprise anyone who knew her:
“For nearly thirty years, Betty gave students the solid foundation on which the rest of their school would rely. Her steady, easygoing, and direct style gave them a sense of confidence that always hold them in good stead.
“The goal of the Graland program was to accept the children as they were and to help them develop in all areas-- personal, social, intellectual, and physical. That was Betty’s philosophy of teaching which began under Georgia Nelson, her inspiration. In 1971, Betty initiated an exchange program with a Denver public school. It was one of the first such ventures to get children from different environments acquainted with each other. She was a teacher of her time, always trying to keep her ideas current.”
