"At the event, I spent some time speaking to Kathleen Gahagan ’57 Hunt who looked at her time at Graland as a chance to step into the fanciful world of ancient history. She felt immersed in the cultures of the Romans and Greeks, Vikings and Knights. She performed plays, sang songs, and wrote stories all based on these time periods. She still remembered the costume she donned for the knighting ceremony. Even more important than costumes, however, was the love of learning she developed here, a passion that fueled her through further studies of ancient history in Italy. Though some might minimize the impact of third, fourth and fifth grade, for Kathleen those grades were instrumental to who she became as a scholar and a person.

“The rest of the evening I spent mostly with a cohort from the class of 1988. With this group, I was struck by their camaraderie and their individuality. After so many years, they fell comfortably into conversation and repartee. Each had such a unique personality and perspective which they shared freely with each other. The foundation of this rapport was their time at Graland, when they, through the support of teachers and friends, developed a belief in themselves. Graland’s commitment to honoring the individual launched each of them on a path to become both a strong individual and a compassionate friend.”
