BUDDY PROGRAM

Philip William Hickey
With thanks to Rosemary Fetter, the trustworthy chronicler of our school's history:

The buddy program is not new -- it began in the early 1980’s and is still is an essential part of the school’s goal of community building.

Team leaders work together to pair kindergarten and fourth grade, first and sixth grade, second and seventh grade, third and eighth grade, fourth and ninth grade.
Both Margaret Akolt, a former first grade and kindergarten teacher, and Parthenia Williams, at that time a fourth-grade teacher, praised the K-fourth grade pairing. Parthenia noted that the fourth graders enjoyed being the older buddy. Margaret commented on the activities. ‘We read books together, did service-learning, writing activities, science and art activities, and homework. We made gingerbread houses at Christmas and fourth-grade buddies helped younger friends make horses for the Kindergarten and Pre-first Rodeo.”
