Jolene Collier

Math Teacher

Math teacher Mrs. Collier loves teaching students that math is all around us. An intrepid world traveler, her kids were born outside the U.S. in the Dominican Republic and China!

Impacting Students
I enjoy teaching an activity called 'Barbie Bungee Jumping.' Students conduct test jumps in class with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 rubber bands, record the distances that the Barbie doll falls, calculate the averages, then come up with an equation that represents their findings. They then use this equation to calculate how many rubber bands they would need for a much higher jump. They test their theory to see if their calculations and equation were correct. The students really enjoy the activity and it helps them to learn about equations, variables, independent and dependent variables, and patterns.

Lifelong Learner
I’m really enjoying the Diversity and Equity Cohort. I am learning a lot about being a more inclusive and accepting person. I am taking that and using it in my classroom to help all students feel more included, respected, and valued.

Favorite Teaching Moment
The entire Southwest trip (well, minus the bus ride)! It is so great to see the students outside of school and learning so much about the history of the Native Americans, nature, camping, independence, themselves, and their classmates.

Favorite Use of Math in the Real World
Everything! Baking with fractions, money with decimals, learning about the world with statistics, geometry in every shape around us, number relationships with patterns, etc. Math is all around us!

Outside the Classroom I’m...
With my three boys and husband, spending time with family and friends, outdoors, camping, playing softball, and traveling.
