Grade 1 Teacher
Students can always put a smile on Mrs. Palma’s face - she says children give her life purpose! She is excited to learn different ways to use technology and innovation skills in her classroom. Ask her about the time she hiked a glacier in Norway - at age 9!
Impacting Students
One lesson that I enjoy teaching is place value. Place value is one of the most important math concepts that primary grade students must master before they can learn more advanced math concepts such as regrouping and multiplication. The activities and games that I plan for this lesson are very hands-on and students have an opportunity to interact and explore with the different place value blocks.
Lifelong Learner
I recently completed Orton Gillingham training. This strengthened my phonics and literacy instruction, specifically with students who are struggling readers. An analogy that the instructor often referenced more times than once compared spelling/reading remediation to antibiotics. In order for a child with strep to feel better, he or she needs medicine daily. If the antibiotic is given sporadically, it takes longer for the child to feel better and the strep can come back. The same thing can be said about a child with reading disabilities. He or she needs reading and spelling remediation daily in order to see growth and success. If the remediation is inconsistent, the student's success and growth will also be inconsistent. I think of this comparison daily when I am working with my own students in the classroom and believe I am a stronger teacher because of it.
