Grade 2: Taking a Page From Gooney Bird

This October, Graland second graders celebrated Gooney Bird Greene Day, a tradition inspired by Lois Lowry’s “Gooney Bird Greene” that has been part of Grade 2 for almost 20 years.
The book follows a second grader with a love of storytelling and a flair for fashion. From pajamas and cowboy boots to tutus and polka-dot shirts, Gooney Bird wears what she likes and is comfortable being herself. Her individuality provided a starting point for students to explore what makes each of them unique.

After reading the book, second graders chose a character, identified a challenge that character faced, and designed an invention to help during Tinker Time. They showcased their creations on Gooney Bird Greene Day, explaining their ideas to classmates.

The celebration also included outfit presentations. Some students dressed like Gooney Bird, while others chose clothing that reflected their interests or personal style. As students shared the stories behind their choices, classmates offered compliments.

For Grade 2 Teacher Ms. Jessica Williams, that appreciation for themselves and one another is at the heart of the tradition. “We hope that students learn to own their individuality and celebrate the characteristics that make them unique,” she said.
