Grade 5: Math Superheroes

Fifth graders were challenged to create a math superhero that represents them as mathematicians for an assignment in Mrs. Dodge's class.
Through problem solving, small group activities, and video reflections, students learned about the brain science behind the learning of new topics. They acquired coping techniques to use when faced with genuine challenge and reflected about their strengths and weaknesses as mathematicians. Then they crafted a “super friend” that would help them when math got challenging; superheroes were created complete with an origin story, a symbol, and a 3D representation that was shared with the class. Solving math problems is a super power anyone can cultivate!
