ECLC: Learning to Code is Child’s Play

To introduce preschool and prekindergarten students to the basics of computer coding, librarian Linda Sears read “Boy + Bot” by Amy Dyckman, a story about a friendship between a young boy and a robot. Then, students got to “program” Ms. Sears to walk a line through the classroom and pick up a stuffed animal.
“The trick is that they can only give me four commands: go, stop, turn around, and pick up,” she shared. “We had a fun and funny time as they began to realize that their commands have to be very specific (the code) in order for me to achieve the goal.”

Next, children partnered up with a set of LEGOs and worked together to build something. One was the “programmer” giving instructions and the other was the “computer” who followed commands.
