In Grade 6, students in Mrs. Katie Singleton's English class recently went on a sensory walk around campus to observe their surroundings and write down what they could see, hear, touch, and feel. "During the activity, the sixth graders were encouraged to add as much detail as they could and use figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and personification when possible to describe their observations," Mrs. Singleton said. "The goal of this lesson was to get comfortable with imagery for an upcoming writing assignment where they will be tasked with including sensory details in a suspenseful setting."
As a Graland educator, Mrs. Singleton enjoys utilizing the school's guiding principle of "embrace experiences” in her teaching. "I love getting the students out of the classroom for activities like this throughout the year. As a teacher, I get to see a new side of students when they are outside of the traditional classroom setting," Mrs. Singleton said. "I love that Graland encourages ongoing opportunities for educators to engage with students outside of the four walls of a classroom to help foster great relationships."
Following the lesson, the sixth graders walked away with the skills to observe their surroundings and will utilize the experience to create meaningful imagery in their upcoming assignment. Write on, Grade 6!
