Grade 1: Conducting A Percussion Band

This month in music class, first graders got to experience what it is like to conduct and participate in their very own orchestra!
According to music teacher Claire Jensen, "First grade is currently working on playing non-pitched percussion and following a conductor. Students are tasked with knowing how to play their instrument correctly, watching the leader for cues when it is their time to play, and listening to the other timbres (or sounds) when they are not playing. As we work towards playing more involved instruments like mallets and even ukuleles next year, students should be able to play by themselves or in their ensemble, and they should be able to quickly switch between playing and listening. The outcomes of this activity are that students are playing, creating, and connecting through instrumental music." When asked why she loves having students participate in this activity, Ms. Jensen said, "I love that each student is able to be a player and a conductor. It's so much fun to see the creative musical choices that the different roles allow. Some students play their instrument at a different volume or tempo each round, and conductors get super creative with how multiple instruments can play at once." As one of Graland's newest educators, Ms. Jensen is looking forward to continually introducing her students to new experiences and skills throughout the year and "getting to know each of the students better and better as the year progresses, not only as part of the Graland community but as musicians!"
