When asked about the activity's importance and how it ties to the social studies curriculum, Kindergarten Team Lead Helen Valiant said, "In Responsive Classroom, we know the first six weeks of school are essential. They are essential for setting up classroom routines, norms, expectations, getting to know each other by name, and learning about our school community. Our first social studies unit is called 'My Classroom and My School.' The scavenger hunt was a fun way to engage the students by moving throughout campus to find different locations and to meet different adults who work at Graland and hear what they do." Throughout the scavenger hunt, students ventured to the head of school's office, the nurse's office, the library, the Gates Invention & Innovation Lab, the dining hall, the gym, the Middle School, and Fries Theater. During each stop, students were met with an educator from that space who introduced themselves, shared about their role on campus, and provided the next clue. Throughout the exercise, kindergarteners were asked to practice their active listening skills and think about the clues that were given before excitedly announcing the next destination of pursuit.
