Rather than recounting the entire trip, each writer selected one meaningful scene to develop in approximately 100 words. Some focused on standing onstage during the class talent show, surrounded by 75 cheering classmates, while others captured the anticipation and nerves of climbing to the top of a 50-foot telephone pole before leaping. Each student chose a moment that stood out and found a way to bring it to life for the reader.

Students began by brainstorming four possible moments before selecting one for their narrative. As part of the class’s emphasis on writing by hand, they handwrote their first drafts before moving through revision and editing. Through two rounds of drafting, they practiced writing an engaging opening, adding vivid sensory details, varying their sentences, and crafting a thoughtful ending. They also learned how a short piece can have a clear beginning, middle, and end when each detail has a purpose.

Comparing their first drafts with their final pieces helped students see how their writing developed. They identified places where they strengthened details, improved word choice, and made their stories clearer and more engaging.

By narrowing their focus, fifth graders learned how carefully chosen details can transform a brief moment into a story worth remembering.
