Before wrapping up his presentation, Mr. Fesing left each second grader a brand new penny, a blank, and bookmarks from the Denver Mint. Be sure to ask your second grader what he or she learned about coins this week!

Did you know?
  • The Denver Mint opened in 1906. It now produces 35 million coins a day worth $2 million.
  • The Denver Mint also stores $60 billion in gold bars as a sort of savings account for the US government.
  • Denver and Philadelphia mints make circulating coins, identifiable by their mint marks (D and P).
  • San Francisco's mint makes proof coins for collectors.
  • The smallest US mint is in West Point, New York, where "investment" coins made from gold, silver and platinum are created.
  • Every 50 years, to honor Abraham Lincoln's birthday, the design on the back of the penny is changed.
