FALL OF 1928

Mr. Phil Hickey

In the fall of 1928, Graland School opened its doors to ninety-four children, grades K-5. That morning, Georgia Nelson, the school's Headmistress, greeted the children and their families. Helping Miss Nelson that morning were some teachers I consider among Graland icons: Chet Preisser and Genevieve Jones. Mr. Preisser taught physical education; Miss Jones taught first grade and rhythm.

By the way, when Miss Nelson was interviewed for the job in the spring of 1927, she mentioned she had never stayed more than three years at a school and would probably move on after a year or two. Miss Nelson served this school from 1927-1960 and returned in 1963-64.
