THE CORKINS CENTER

Philip William Hickey
The Corkins Center will have its grand opening on Wednesday, October 19. If you have not walked through the building, prepare to be impressed, if not awed.

In a few short minutes one day, I decided the new library will be my favorite place in the new building. I have chosen my cubicle for those moments when I wish to be away from my office and the archives. In my “adolescent” years, I spent many a free period with the inimitable and irrepressible Katie Dodge “forcefeeding” me books I needed to read. Until I take my leave from Graland School, I shall always consider the library Katie’s place. If you smell roses in the building, that will mean that Katie is watching over our new space.

Thanks to my elves -- Jeri Volpe, Andrean Andrus, and Cathy Naughton-- there will be an archival display adjacent to the front desk in the Corkins Center. This “dependent claus(e)” needed much help to put this together. Those of you who have seen some of my classrooms know that design has never been my strength. I may know I should not wear a pink shirt with a magenta tie, but that’s it when it comes to design. Quite honestly, what you will see is a very personal version of what’s in the archives-- I chose what I cherish.

Enjoy the building!
