MASTER TEACHER: DENNIS GRIEBEL (1977-2001)

Philip William Hickey
Dennis was a very special teacher at Graland School: only Dennis could coax me, Mr. Indoors, to cross a narrow ledge hanging onto a rope overlooking a raging river of cold water; only Dennis could cajole me into teaching Study Skills in summer school -- or worse, Hyperstudio; only Dennis could convince me that algebra could be fun -- Algebra by Richard Johnson, Lona Lee Lendsey, and William Slesnick. A true classic -- imagine a textbook without pictures!  oodness, he even dragged me to watch his wrestling team do whatever wrestlers do.

Michael Noricks, Spanish teacher supreme and one of Dennis’s fans, wrote this paragraph to honor Dennis at the Master Teachers’ reception:

“Dennis Griebel personifies the terms integrity, loyalty, and equanimity. Throughout his highly successful career, Dennis represented the best of Graland’s teachers. Recruited from the prestigious Greenhill School by Headmaster Michael Teitelman in 1977, Dennis carried a myriad of responsibilities during his tenure, including coach, eighth-grade team leader, mathematics teacher, math department chair, and, of course, technology coordinator. His team members and math students recall his quiet sincerity and his willingness to offer his time freely to students.”
