GRALAND PHILOSOPHY: PART ONE

I found this philosophy at the bottom of a box that I might lovingly call a mishmash. I have no idea how to date this document, but I am assuming it was written before the fiftieth birthday celebration and fits into the theme of celebrating the school’s first fifty years. Happy Reading!

“We may safely assume that any school worth attending aims to develop the character and the intellect of the individual student to the fullest. But it is also evident that such development takes place within the framework of a particular philosophy.

“It is not easy to verbalize Graland’s philosophy, compounded as it is of years of development, inspiring leadership, and great flexibility in individual approach. Yet, the outsiders' strong impression of enthusiasm in its staff and support by its friends is good evidence that here is a common bond of belief, which we have attempted to formulate.

STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

“We believe that greatness of mind and spirit comes from within and cannot be imposed. To this end, we believe that the student must be led to a personal appropriation of knowledge and value and must be guided to self-leadership.

“We believe that knowledge without virtue is a cold thing, and that the worth of the individual is measured in honor, courage, industry, integrity, decisiveness, humility, dignity, compassion, and dedication. In fairness to the student, we will not condone conscious deviation from these.

“We believe that virtue without knowledge is adrift, and that genuine academic achievement must be required for long continued attendance at Graland. We believe that academic challenge and competition to be fair and healthy, and that excellence is a proper goal.”
