MASTER TEACHER: LUCILE HOBELMAN (1936-1970)

Philip William Hickey
When I came to Graland, Mrs. Hobelman was a part-time tutor who helped students with, I believe, reading and handwriting. She was delightful lady whose love for Graland was obvious; she deeply respected John Comfort who later penned these thoughtful words on her:

“Lucile Hobelman was a special teacher not only in the sense that she was very dedicated but because she was a unique individual. Drama and reading were Lucile’s great loves, and her energy, creativity, and devotion nurtured Graland students for thirty-four years. As an English and drama teacher, she brought virtually every literary genre to the classroom and the stage. Her lively style and infectious laugh made every Graland student feel at ease.

“Late in her career, Lucile focused on children with learning difficulties. She worked primarily one-on-one with the boys and girls in her charge, and she cared deeply for each of her students. She had patience and concern for all and took on the importance of helping other faculty members understand the problems of each child they taught.”
