MASTER TEACHER: VIRGINIA MAURICE (1979-1999)

Philip William Hickey
Virginia’s smile and happy greeting endeared her to all.
The students, especially the Lower School students, worshipped her. She wanted everyone to enjoy the cafeteria food and would do her best to look in the pantry if someone wanted something else. She always supplied me with crackers which prevented me from spending most of my day overdosing on sugar -- in those days, I began my day at Winchell’s Donut House.

Dear Jackie Wylde, mother of Trent’ 86 and Chelsea ‘88 Hood, loved working with Virginia. Mrs. Wylde still works at Graland in our new kitchen. Here are some thoughts from Jackie about Virginia:

“Virginia Maurice was a loyal and devoted member throughout her twenty years of service in the Graland kitchen. As a young lady, Virginia was given loving instruction in the preparation of treasured family recipes by her beloved madres. Their family kitchen was a gathering place of both love and good food. We, at Graland, called upon her yearly to share her expertise with her Graland familia: chile rellenos, enchiladas, and her ‘Graland famous guacamole! No one could duplicate the flavor and texture she combined so skillfully. Muchas gracias, dear Virginia, por sus años at Graland. For your caring nature and splendid Mexican food, we salute you!”
