A Buzz-Worthy Season in Preschool

It’s been a buzz-worthy spring in Preschool—full of interactive learning and seasonal discovery. Students participated in an interdisciplinary unit that wove together science, math, art, and literacy, all centered on the shared themes of insects, plants, and the natural world.
Highlights of the unit included a visit from Graland Grade 5 Teachers (and beekeepers) Mr. and Mrs. Dodge, who introduced students to beekeeping tools, shared stories, and offered a taste of fresh honey. Another exciting moment was a visit from the Butterfly Pavilion, where students observed real insects up close and learned about their unique features and roles in nature.

Throughout the season, preschoolers explored concepts of growth, transformation, and life cycles across multiple subjects. In science, they observed caterpillars in their chrysalis stage and eagerly awaited their transformation into butterflies. In math, they graphed their favorite vegetables, compared their size to beetles as part of a measurement activity, and collaborated on a class Venn diagram to compare what plants and people need to grow.

In art, students used their observational skills to create still-life flower drawings and strengthened fine motor coordination by using pipettes to drip watercolor onto coffee filters, later transformed into colorful butterflies now “flying” around the classroom.

As the school year wraps up, preschoolers completed their final self-portraits—part of a monthly series from August through May. Like the butterflies they studied, these portraits beautifully reflect each child’s personal metamorphosis, showcasing growth in confidence, creativity, and self-expression.
