Grade 3 Greets Colorado Leaders During Capitol Visit

As part of their yearlong study of Colorado’s history and geography, third graders took a special trip to the Colorado State Capitol, where they not only toured the historic building but also had the rare opportunity to meet and interview Governor Jared Polis and Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young.
Led by Capitol guides, students explored the chambers where laws are made and decisions are debated, deepening their understanding of how state government works. But the highlight of the day came when the Governor and Treasurer made time to speak directly with students, answering thoughtful, student-prepared questions about leadership, responsibility, and life in public service.

The visit is one of several immersive experiences that make up the Exploring Colorado unit. Throughout the year, students have ventured to places such as Chief Mountain, the Plains Conservation Center, the Argo Mine, and the History Colorado Center to learn about the state’s geography, natural resources, and diverse history. Earlier this year, they also constructed three-dimensional salt dough maps of Colorado in the Gates Lab, showcasing their knowledge in a tactile, visual form.

From asking questions at the Capitol to presenting handmade maps in the classroom, third graders have built a stronger connection to their home state this year. Way to go, Graland third graders!
