Impacting Students
Every year we set goals -- sometimes monthly, sometimes quarterly -- whatever we need as a class. We talk about the need for achievable goals and the importance of sharing them with each other. I always start by talking about areas of my life that I could imagine improving and then pick a goal to help me do that. I think it's important that kids see adults as flawed and I share my goal with them because communities help hold each other accountable. An achieved goal makes the community stronger, so we are all invested in each other's success. I love watching kids be really self-aware and open and vulnerable with each other. When we get it right I know we are on our way to building a strong, trusting community.

Lifelong Learner
Being surrounded by people who look like me at the People of Color Conference, sharing stories and strategies for feeling successful and valued in a workplace with too few "mirrors," is always impactful. It gives me further insight into what it must feel like to be a student without a plethora of "mirrors" in their environment and it makes me even more committed to providing validating and uplifting experiences to every student in my class. Everyone should feel like they belong.

Favorite Teaching Moment
Doing an audit of picture books in the Graland library with my class and Jessica Williams' fourth grade class. We wanted to see how many picture books had covers in which we could see diverse characters and/or topics.

Life Goal
See a Broadway show ON Broadway! If I could teach during the school year and be a pool shark the rest of the time I'd be a very happy person. (I'm not quite good enough to pull that off, but I love it!)

Outside of Graland I’m ...
Choir rehearsal, at the theater, getting coffee, meeting up with a friend.

Favorite Childhood Memory
When our parents went out to dinner without us my grandmother treated me, my brother, and my cousins to our own special dinner. She set a table with fancy dishes complete with wine glasses, draped a napkin over her arm, and served us a delicious three-course meal. We were in heaven!
