Grade 2: Building Language and Math Foundations

Students in Ms. Stratman’s class rotated through a variety of literacy stations that gave them ample choice in their language studies.
At the Reader’s Theater table, they took turns reading aloud, using their voices to narrate the text. Other students engaged in independent reading, illustrated book cover for a class book about making mistakes or worked with teaching resident, Ms. Murphy, on fluency. Foundational language skills taught in Grade 2 include comprehension, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, reading aloud, speaking and listening, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and writing.

Meanwhile, mathematicians in Ms. Cheadle’s class refreshed their understanding of how to add two-digit numbers. Identifying the tens place and ones place in a math problem, they got into the habit of regrouping when the ones added up to more than nine. “Forgetting to count the carry over is the biggest mistake second graders make,” Ms. Cheadle cautioned. After the group lesson, they got to work independently in their textbooks to solve math problems involving two digits. This year with their Math in Focus curriculum, second graders will focus on a number of skills including:
  • Problem-solving skills and strategies
  • Counting, comparing, and writing numbers to 1,000
  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using bar models
  • Measuring length, mass, and volume in metric units
  • Telling time
  • Recognizing bills and coins
  • Classifying lines and surfaces
