Supporting Each Other in Our Collective Grief

A Message from Tara Lavizzo, Middle School Counselor

As we settle into the reality that life as we knew it will not be returning soon, we also must start to settle into the process of dealing with the raw emotions that many of us are struggling with day to day. There are those of us who are experiencing anger at this moment, some of us are experiencing sadness from the loss of normal life and the loss of our sense of security, and most of us are feeling lonely and isolated from our connections to friends, extended family, and community. Many mental health experts believe we are experiencing what is called collective grief. Essentially, all of us are experiencing varying amounts of emotional suffering because something we’ve lost or someone we love has been taken away because of this pandemic.
So how can we help each other manage this grief and support each other through this period? Here are some recommendations from experts in the field of mental health:
  • Acknowledge the grief. It’s okay to talk about what has been lost, but more importantly do your best to validate the feelings of loss while trying to remain in the present.
  • Talk with your family and friends about how they are managing. Since everyone grieves differently, allow everyone the space to talk on their own terms, not yours.
  • Try to let go of the things you cannot control and instead focus on the control you have over your own feelings.
  • As a family, develop and stick to a daily routine. Routines help all of us feel more normal in an abnormal time.
  • Above all, find safe and creative ways to connect with others, both in your home and in your larger circle of friends and community.
Graland’s online community board is a great way to reach out and ask for help if you need it. Don’t be shy! There are others in our circle who would be glad to come alongside and support you; whether you need craft supplies for a school project or want a new approach to establishing a successful routine, we are here for each other.
