Grade 3: Bards in the Making

According to Drama Teacher Julie Lachance, Grade 3 has chosen to create their own plays for their second rotation of drama. They began the process with small and large group brainstorming sessions in which students shared their ideas.
“We then expanded those ideas, added character possibilities, mulled over prop and costume concepts, etc.,” said Ms. Lachance. “Next, we narrowed down the choices to three or four ideas in each class. Students voted for their favorites, and we were left with one idea on which to base our play. It was a fabulous creative process and, in some classes, we were even able to combine several together so everyone’s idea was used.”

“For example,” she continued, “Ms. Sheehan’s class is creating a play in which several students arrive at school one day to discover the world is mixed up and opposite! Ms. Sheehan has become Ms. Sheep, and everything is backwards and upside down. The students will have to complete certain challenges in order to get out of the backwards world and return to normal.”

Mrs. O’Connor’s class is doing a play about children who end up in the woods and must survive. They befriend some animals, who help them defeat aliens that are trying to take over the world.

The next few weeks will be spent in small and large groups creating various scenes in the play, which they will film and edit together so families at home can see their work. Students will be designing costumes and props, while following COVID protocols. Move over, Shakespeare!
