MASTER TEACHER: MAUREEN COMI (1981-2002)

Philip William Hickey
With elan and diligence, Maureen pursued all her positions at the school. As an administrative assistant and the school’s registrar, Maureen added so much to the school’s climate; to all her positions, she brought the efficiency of *Susie MacNamara.

Carol Lay Abramowitz, former Graland parent and past employee (Director of Testing and Head of Middle School), highlights Maureen’s career at the school:

“In 1981, Joanne Thorsen, the gracious and elegant head of Lower School, recognized Maureen’s talents as suited for our school. Her organizational wizardry, sensitivity to children and parents, and support for faculty prepared her well for the roles that followed, in Admissions, in the Middle School, and as Registrar. Long before the Middle School endorsed the Year of Manners, Ms. Comi guided our Middle School youngsters in politeness: ‘May I please use the phone?’ ‘Thank you very much.’ In addition, she observed the signs of distress before they erupted and found support for children in need. In her presence, the ‘best selves’ of children and adults emerged and prevailed.”
