    Maintenance Technician Oliverio Cervantes started at Graland in 2021. Originally from Centennial, Colorado, Mr. Cervantes has a bachelor’s in aviation technology from Metropolitan State University.

    Previously serving the Cherry Creek School District, Mr. Cervantes came to Graland after he was referred by a friend who talked highly of the school's environment. When he is not at Graland, Mr. Cervantes enjoys working out, snowboarding, interior design, and spending time with friends and family.

    Marti joined Graland as our head of Middle School in 2017 after working as a middle school English teacher and dean of students. She has a master’s degree in curriculum and pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Denver and a bachelor’s degree in English and African American studies with a minor in music from Bowdoin College in Maine.
     
    “Graland is an amazing institution that recognizes that the middle school years are a time of self-discovery with a burgeoning sense of independence,” she says. “For the first time in their lives, this is the age where students have the freedom to explore their interests, develop their talents, and begin the journey of who they are to become.”
     
    A Denver native, Marti enjoys playing tennis and taking any opportunity to learn something new.

    Jorge Chavez has been teaching Grade 8 math and algebra at Graland since 2009. Jorge double majored at the University of Notre Dame in Spanish and computer applications, and received a master’s degree in mathematics instruction and curriculum from the University of Delaware.

    Prior to joining Graland, Jorge taught for nine years in Wilmington, Del., where he headed the middle school math department at Wilmington Friends School. Before that he taught at St. Lawrence The Martyr in Santa Clara, Calif. In addition to teaching math, Jorge is a Grade 8 advisor and coaches the Grade 8 girls’ basketball team. He is also a co-director and coach for the Gates Invention Program, as well as a member of Graland’s technology cohort.

    Jorge loves that the Graland faculty looks out for each other and is always supportive, and that the students are genuine young people who really want to learn. Outside of school, Jorge enjoys spending time with his family and exploring everything that Colorado has to offer.

    Bio
     
    Science teacher and eighth grade advisor, Mrs. Jen Chen, joined the Grade 8 team in 2019 with a master’s in education (George Washington University) and an AB in earth and ocean sciences (Duke University). Previously, she taught science courses at an all-girls independent school in Bethesda, Maryland. She is originally from Kenilworth, Illinois.

    Mrs. Chen loves Graland’s dual focus on students' academic success and character development. She was also drawn to the camaraderie among the faculty after observing their commitment to optimizing the student experience.

    Away from the classroom, Mrs. Chen spends most of her time keeping up with two busy sons and exploring Denver’s mountains, parks and playgrounds. She also enjoys running and cooking.

    Josh started at Graland in 2002 as the ninth grade English teacher and went on to serve in a lead adminstrative role in the Middle School. He became the Head of School in 2017. Prior to joining Graland, he taught humanities and drama at a Denver charter school, and later became the co-director of the middle school program there. Josh holds a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and a master’s in English literature from Middlebury College in Vermont and more recently earned a second master’s in education from Columbia University in New York City. Josh loves the blend of progressive and traditional teaching methods at Graland, and how the faculty works to combine diverse strategies in order to best serve their students.

    Originally from Boulder, Josh spends a lot of free time with his family, playing tennis, skiing and hiking. He also loves to write poetry and has traveled extensively in Nepal and India. He is a Graland parent, with two students at the School.

    Katie is a current Graland parent and a dedicated French instructor who has combined her love for teaching French with an environment that she knows and respects. She received her master’s degree in K-12 foreign language education from the University of Denver. During college, Katie studied abroad at the University of Bordeaux in France, where she perfected her grasp of the French language.
     
    Before coming to Graland, Katie gained teaching experience with preschool, elementary and high school French students in the Denver area. Her teaching style includes integrating technology into her student’s learning platform. She says, “I would like to explore additional innovation and creativity in the classroom.”
     
    On her own time, Katie has a broad range of hobbies including hiking, yoga, running and baking. Most of all she likes to travel abroad so that she can share her experiences and her enthusiasm for the French language and culture.

    Ms. Cohen is looking forward to being a Grade 1 resident teacher during the 2023-24 school year! One of Denver’s newest residents, Ms. Cohen moved to Colorado from Seattle, Washington, during the summer of 2023. 

    Previously working as a preschool teaching assistant, Ms. Cohen shared that she is “drawn to this position at Graland after learning about the school’s guiding principles and meeting with current teachers.” In addition, Ms. Cohen is looking forward to being part of the school community and getting to know her students. 

    In her free time, Ms. Cohen enjoys reading, cooking, and yoga. She currently holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Western Washington University.

    A native of Colorado, math teacher Jolene Collier joined the sixth-grade team at Graland in 2017. She earned a bachelor’s degree in law and justice studies from Rowan University and then pursued an alternative teaching license in secondary mathematics from Metropolitan State College.

    After her first two years teaching middle school math, Jolene moved abroad to teach at international schools in South Korea, the Dominican Republic and China for the next 10 years. When she applied to work at Graland, Jolene says, “Graland is a top-notch school with strong academic programs, good institutional structures, lots of opportunities for students, a focus on the whole child, and a focus on inclusivity and diversity.”

    It’s no surprise that Jolene enjoys traveling, learning about new places, trying new foods, and meeting different people -- she has traveled to more than 20 countries! A mom of three boys, Jolene stays busy with her family and especially enjoys spending time outdoors.

    PE teacher and coach, Ryan Collier, was hired by Graland in 2020 following the retirement of Master Teacher Dick Kinney. Coach Collier’s hometown is West Milford, New Jersey, and he has a bachelor’s degree in human performance and sport from Metropolitan State University in Denver.
     
    His most recent job at Mackintosh Academy (K-8) in Boulder and his experience teaching overseas prepared Coach Collier for an exciting career at Graland. He wanted to join the team at Graland to be close to family and be part of the school’s amazing programs and facilities.
     
    Not surprisingly, exercise is on the list of things Coach Collier enjoys. He also likes camping and traveling with his family.

    Steve Collins is our Grade 7 science teacher who also serves as a coach in the Gates Invention and Innovation Program and a co-advisor to the TIDES 1 scuba certification club at Graland.  He joined our Middle School faculty in 2016 with a master’s degree in learning and teaching (Harvard University), a bachelor’s degree in biology (University of South Carolina) and a bachelor’s degree in English (Wesleyan University).

    Steve has a variety of teaching experiences. He spent 10 years working as a park ranger naturalist for the U.S. National Park Service and also lived and taught overseas in Malawi, Africa, as a volunteer with the U.S. Peace Corps. Since then, Steve has made a career out of teaching middle school science in the independent school environment, most recently at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Florida. In searching for his next professional opportunity, Steve says he was impressed by Graland’s "dynamic community of learners and educators who embrace innovation and creativity.”

    Since relocating to Colorado, Steve indulges in some of his favorite outdoor activities like hiking and camping. He especially likes to explore and “notice details” about the world around him. Steve also plays the banjo and likes to visit far off, wild places with his family.

    Our eighth-grade English teacher, Katy Cooper, has a master’s degree in English from California State University-Los Angeles and a bachelor’s in English from Georgetown University.
     
    Before joining our faculty in 2017, Katy’s work experience included teaching English to high school seniors at DSST and eighth graders at St. Mary's Academy. When searching out a new opportunity, Katy says she was attracted to Graland's tight knit sense of community along with its academic rigor.
     
    At home, Katy enjoys reading, running, eating and being a parent. She is is a native of McLean, Virginia.

    Art teacher Andréa Crane considers the world her hometown since she’s been traveling all her life. She was born in New Zealand where her father worked for the American Embassy.

    Mrs. Crane earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art with an emphasis in drawing and an art education licensure from Metropolitan State University of Denver. She also is a trained chef, with an associate's degree in culinary arts from The Culinary Institute of America in New York. In addition to teaching art to Lower and Middle School students, Andrea is a Gates Invention and Innovation coach and advisor to seventh graders.

    Mrs. Crane started at Graland in 2011 as an art intern and enjoys the School’s community of staff and students. “Students show a genuine interest in learning and are always very supportive of each other,” she says.

    Originally from Denver, Colorado, Alex Crowley is a Lower School flex teacher who started at Graland in 2020. With bachelor’s degrees in international studies and economics from American University, Ms. Crowley previously worked for lobbying groups in Washington D.C. Outside of Graland, you will find Ms. Crowley whitewater rafting and rock climbing whenever she can!

Graland Country Day School is a private school in Denver, Colorado, serving students in preschool, kindergarten, elementary, and middle school. Founded in Denver in 1927, Graland incorporates a rich, experiential learning approach in a traditional classroom setting, emphasizing the development of globally and socially conscious leaders who excel academically.
