    Graduation Speaker
Every year, when I begin planning for this speech, I think of an individual or event that defines the year and gives you, our graduates, a bit of guidance going forward. For this graduation, instead of one person, I want to focus on a group of people—scientists. During the last year, scientists accelerated our reemergence from this pandemic period by building on past scientific work and creating a highly effective vaccine. I want to devote this speech to the attributes of a scientist to honor their work and to honor you.

As I scan this group of 8th grade students, I can’t help but think back to a specific date in 2017. It was Wednesday, April 26, 2017, to be exact. Does this date ring a bell for anyone? If not, let me give you some more details. Ms. McCaffery was Head of School, Mr. Cobb was Head of Middle School, and I was a dean and 8th grade English teacher at Kent Denver School. Anything? Student Nominated Graduation Dinner Speaker
It is graduation season, and I have been lucky enough to hear some brilliant commencement speeches over the past weeks. Brilliant people with brilliant advice, celebrating brilliant students, and to be honest, I thought about stealing their words. I was swept up by their grace and poise and their ease sharing with their audience. They knew what they were doing. They shared a few stories, offered good advice, and they had a unifying theme. They made speaking at graduation look really cool.

Although this past year and a half looked very different than others, I'm very happy to look back on all the memories we have made throughout the years. Whether you came here in kindergarten, fourth grade, or seventh grade, we all have been through so much together. It is hard to put all the memories in one speech, but I will try.

My fellow graduates and friends. It is an honor to speak to all of you today. Here we are the night before we make our last memories as a whole grade. I cannot believe that what feels like only yesterday, we were scared kindergarteners, looking up to the intimidating 8th graders. Many of us are ready to move forward, but hopefully we will stay in contact with one another. In just a few days, we will begin our final summer before we become official high schoolers.
