Lealy Murphy

Grade 3 Teacher

Did you know that as a child, Mrs. Murphy lived near Disneyland, Disney World, and Busch Gardens? She spent a lot of time riding roller coasters as a kid! Ask her about her favorite one!

Impacting Students
I love to teach inquiry-based lessons. To kick off a social studies unit about immigration, we look at population density maps of the United States from the 1600s to the present time. Students make observations about where people settled and when. Then, we talk about reasons why, and I bring them into our contemporary times to think about why people move today. Curiosity is a great motivator for learning!

Lifelong Learner
I am currently pursuing my master's degree in education and plan to graduate in the winter of 2023. I recently attended PEBC's Minds on Math Workshop, which focuses on incorporating problem-solving and critical thinking in math instruction. However, the most rewarding learning experiences come from observing my students as a way of reflecting on my own teaching.

Favorite Teaching Moment
One of my most memorable teaching moments happened when reading a pivotal chapter in the book "Because of Winn-Dixie" with my third graders. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger, leaving us wondering whether everything will be alright or not. We all felt the gravity and sorrow of the situation, and some students could personally relate. When a few of the students began to cry, I worried I wouldn't be able to comfort all of them, but I didn't need to. Classmates sprung into action, and soon, kids were hugging one another, offering comforting words, and being sympathetic listeners. Books that grapple with sad or difficult topics can help students process their own experiences. A nurturing classroom community provides a safe place for kids to share and feel seen and heard.

Life Goals
I would like to teach overseas in an international school. I would like to trace my Chinese and Swedish genealogies. And there are a few more 14ers I would like to hike!

Other than Graland, I Support…
My family supports the Colorado 14ers Initiative, our local NPR station, and every Girl Scout who comes to our door! My husband and I enjoy volunteering our time at our kids' schools whenever possible.
