Grade 3: Stitching Together a Thoughtful Proposal

In Grade 3, students have been studying how to write persuasive paragraphs. As part of the unit, they learned the key parts of persuasive writing, including an introduction that presents a clear thesis statement, or claim, supporting reasons with details, and a strong concluding statement.
To put their learning into practice, each class worked together to write a persuasive speech with a shared goal: convincing school leadership to allow a Bring Your Stuffed Animal to School Day for third graders.

Students drafted an opening greeting, clearly stated their thesis statement, and developed supporting reasons to explain why the special day would be meaningful. They also included agreed-upon guidelines outlining how stuffed animals would be used responsibly during the school day, followed by a formal closing.

Once finalized, third graders presented their speech to Head of Lower School Ms. Shaun Satterfield and Associate Head of Lower School Ms. Parthenia Williams. Students took turns reading portions of the speech. Their efforts were successful, and third grade was awarded a Stuffed Animal Day as a result of their convincing presentations.
