Grade 1: Egg-citing News

Eggs-tra, eggs-tra, read all about it! Baby chicks have officially hatched in Grade 1.
The hatching was part of a grade-wide bird unit that connected learning across science, writing, art, library, and service learning.

In science, first graders worked with Lower School Science Teacher Mrs. Sarah Jackson to incubate and care for chicken eggs. After weeks of patience and attention, the eggs began to hatch, and the chicks were moved to a brooding box, where they continue to grow. Leading up to the hatching, students studied different types of birds and migration patterns, examined feathers and beaks, designed and built nests as part of a STEM challenge, and explored the structure of eggs through candling and dissection.

Beyond science, students researched and shared bird reports, observed live nest cams, visited the Bird Conservatory at Barr Lake, created clay birds, wrote poetry, and explored ways to make the Graland campus more bird-friendly.

The arrival of the chicks brought the unit full circle, giving students the opportunity to Live the Learning as they observed and cared for the animals they had been studying.
