Fifth graders completed a unit on ancient Egypt (2700-1000 BC) and the foundations of Judaism in Nabil Odulate’s class this week. They studied the geography of the area and learned how the empire’s location on the Nile River influenced the lifestyle and economy of the ancient civilization. They also learned about the political system and the major accomplishments of early Egyptian pharaohs. Finally, the unit described the social structure and the people’s belief in gods and goddesses.
“A lot of my students have had some exposure to the Egyptian culture already, either through travel or family connections,” explains Mr. Odulate. “Many are also fans ofThe Kane Chronicles, young adult books by Rick Riordan about the gods of Ancient Egypt.” He also says students are keenly interested in learning about the longevity of the Egyptian civilization and its first female pharaoh, Hatshepsut.
To gain a better understanding of Judaism, the class studied important patriarchs like Joseph and Moses, kings like David and Solomon, holidays, branches of the religion, practices, traditions, beliefs and the Holocaust. This week, they presented their learning to classmates using posters, slideshows, skits and video.
“This has been a fun unit that has inspired me to dive in and learn more about the Egyptian culture,” says Mr. Odulate. “I would really like to visit the area someday.”
