This month in drama class with Mrs. Julie LaChance, third graders were in the midst of writing their own original plays, a collaborative process that will later grow into full drama productions.
When classes gathered, students sat in a circle to collaboratively write and refine their scripts, with each class developing its own original play. One by one, students took turns adding to the story while Mrs. LaChance typed, guiding the group as they thought about theme, character voice, tone, and stage direction. As ideas were shared, students listened closely, built on one another’s suggestions, and made decisions together about how their stories should unfold.
The scriptwriting phase is the foundation for the rest of the unit. Once scripts are complete, students will move into rehearsing, performing, and creating the costumes, sets, and props that bring their stories to life. The process will culminate in live performances for families later this spring.
Through this work, third graders are developing storytelling skills, practicing collaboration, and learning how ideas evolve from the page to the stage.
