As Ms. Cheadle read Mr. Gumpy's Outing, a picture book written and illustrated by John Burningham, she paused periodically to ensure students were paying attention and to draw attention to the act of questioning: "What do you think will happen next?" "Did it end the way you thought it would?" Questioning is the first step to better understanding written text and gaining more sophisticated reading strategies like making predictions about the storyline. Go ask questions!
