Middle School students assembled on Wednesday to watch their peers compete in National Geographic’s GeoBee a stepping stone to the statewide contest later this spring. After qualifying rounds, two representatives from each grade faced off, answering questions about US and world geography. In the end, sixth grader Anne Hawley took home the title of Graland 2018 Geography Bee Champion.

Questions centered around state capitals, countries of the world, landmarks, waterways and so forth. Students also answered a question requiring them to apply critical thinking and map reading skills. It took several rounds of competition before Anne faced Alex Warot (5) in the championship round.

“At the beginning,” says Anne, “I was nervous and worried that I didn’t study enough. I just had to let go and do my best.”

Organized by the Middle School history department, the bee determines which student will advance to the Colorado National Geographic Bee on Friday, March 29.

To prepare for the annual contest, Anne studies an atlas, a tool history teacher Mitch Masters says she toted around every day last year. “Anne is a hard worker,” he says. “It’s not a surprise that she is Graland’s new champion. She is engaged, passionate and she cares about the world.”

The Colorado winner on March 29 will go on to the national championship, held in May in Washington, DC. Good luck, Anne!

Congratulations to these 2018 Geography Bee Contestants
