Grade 7: Interdisciplinary Unit Honors Intergenerational Connections
This February, as part of their year-long service learning project on intergenerational connections, every seventh grader constructed a memory box to celebrate a senior in their life. For the past few months, students have been prepping for the project and carrying out the Middle School's theme of "Your Story, My Story, Our Story" by researching and interviewing an important senior in their life.
This month, their hard work came together as they designed and built their tribute displays in the Gates Lab and completed support work using writing, science, and math skills. In English class, students compiled their research and interviews into biographies about the person they are honoring. In science, the seventh graders learned how the brain creates and stores memories and also how they can be lost due to various forms of dementia, bringing greater understanding to the purpose of their memory box creations. And using math competencies, students measured and cut materials effectively and successfully turned their 2D designs into 3D boxes.
