Grade 1 Shines a Light on Chick Development

It’s been an exciting April in Ms. Sarah Jackson’s Lower School Science classroom, where first graders have been exploring chick growth and development up close. As part of their year-long study on birds, students recently participated in egg candling, a process that uses light to examine fertilized eggs and observe early development. This lesson introduced them to the parts of an egg and sparked conversations about what chicks need to grow and thrive.

After weeks of careful observation and care, the chicks have now hatched! Students are continuing to make scientific observations, learning about life cycles firsthand, and practicing empathy and responsibility as they care for the baby chicks.

The bird unit, a signature part of the Grade 1 experience and service learning, weaves together science, art, Spanish, and literacy. Throughout the year, students design inventions to help birds, visit a bird sanctuary, and complete in-depth bird reports that showcase both their research and reflections. It’s been an egg-straordinary experience!
