Grade 1: Cute Chicks

Two cute chicks joined the first grade science classroom this week!
After incubating for 21 days, Opal and Pearl began pecking out of their shells and emerging into the world under the gaze of excited students. The lesson by science teacher Michelle Benge taught first graders all about how a chick develops in the egg.

"To hatch, a chick needs heat, humidity, food, water and protection," Michelle explains. In a recent science experiment, students dissected unfertilized eggs to examine and identify the various parts that allow the baby chick to mature.

Once the eggs hatched, students learned about how chicks grow. Their down feathers quickly begin to be replaced by adult feathers and they get bigger every day.

Today, Opal and Pearl will move into their new home, a chicken coop on Birch Street. They will live at the home of Bill Bivens and Larissa Luhrs under the watchful eye of first grader Finian Bivens. What a memorable science lesson for Grade 1!
