Grade 5: Hats Help Teach Vocabulary

If you had to portray the word "deluge," would you turn a bucket and an umbrella into a hat and decorate it with blue Jolly Rancher candies? That's what Grace Dale did for a fifth grade vocabulary assignment. She and her classmates were asked to make hats to demonstrate the meaning of words like "sabotage," "acute," "epic" and "scan." The results both surprised and delighted teacher Kimm Lucas.

That's what Grace Dale did for a fifth grade vocabulary assignment. She and her classmates were asked to make hats to demonstrate the meaning of words like "sabotage," "acute," "epic" and "scan." The results both surprised and delighted teacher Kimm Lucas.

Kimm was inspired to assign vocabulary hats after reading another teacher's blog. The hats had to meet three requirements: visually represent the word, display the word, and define it.

"This assignment is one way for students to connect with the words around them," says Kimm. "I was bowled by their creativity in interpreting the words and saw a new side to some students who don't normally engage as much in class. They were very energized by the project."

Some of the creative hats submitted include one with a helium balloon attached to a basket ("billow"), a hat made entirely from duct tape, and another that turned the hat over and used the bowl for a diorama. Go create, Grade 5!
