Grade 1: Author Visit

What does it mean to be worthwhile? First graders found out from Graland alumnus and author Taylor Kirkpatrick ‘88, who brought his book, Worthwhile, to Mrs. Lisa Ross’ class this week. Worthwhile is the story of Travis, a boy who sometimes makes mistakes. Under the guidance of his grandmother, he sets out to change his life by being more considerate of others.

“I have used Taylor’s book as a mentor text over the years to demonstrate social emotional skills, adjectives, imagery and additional literacy skills,” shares Mrs. Ross.

After reading aloud, Mr. Kirkpatrick discussed the book with students and answered their questions. They talked about the theme, what it’s like to write a book, and how authors use their imaginations to pick names for their characters and to mash words together.

Nadia Higley sat in the front row and soaked up the lesson. “Worthwhile means helping people and doing kind things,” she shared. “In the end, Travis learned how to be nice.”

Before leaving, Mr. Kirkpatrick did a nice thing himself. He gifted each student with a copy of Worthwhile to take home. Thank you!
