Grade 1: Using Addition to Solve Real-World Problems

In Grade 1 math, students have been learning how to use addition to solve real-world problems. During the first part of the lesson, the first graders gathered as a class to discuss the steps of solving a math problem.
They determined they should: 1. Understand the problem. 2. Think of a plan to solve the problem using one of their strategies (such as number bonds*). 3. Carry out the plan. 4. Check the answer. Following this discussion, the students returned to their desks to practice what they learned independently before splitting into pairs to solve more real-world math problems together. Several of the scenarios included, “If a store sells 5 pink sweaters and 3 blue sweaters, how many sweaters does the shop sell in all?” and “If Ava paints 4 yellow flowers and Mason paints 4 purple flowers, how many flowers did the children paint in all?” Keep up the excellent work, Grade 1 mathematicians!

*Number bonds are pairs of numbers that can be added together to make another number (for example, 4+2=6). They are some of the most basic yet most important parts of math for students to learn.
