Grade 5: New York Times Best-Selling Author Visit & Student/Parent Book Club

Recently, Graland students received a special visit from New York Times Best-Selling Author Lisa McMann and her husband, Matt McMann, a fellow children’s book author.
Mrs. McMann is the author of “The Forgotten Five” and “The Unwanteds,” two very popular series among student readers at Graland. Mr. McMann, a former professional musician, recently published the first three books in his new “Monsterious” series. Following their group presentation in the Graland Library, Mr. and Mrs. McMann joined Grade 5 English Teacher Mrs. Lucas and several Grade 5 parents and students in the classroom for an intimate book club discussion. In the spirit of Graland’s strategic plan goal of “engaging families,” fifth graders and their parents read Mrs. McMann’s books together before her and Mr. McMann’s visit. During the book club meeting, parents and students alike were excited to ask the McManns questions such as, “Which characters do you feel the most connected to and why?” “How long does it take you to write a book?” “How do you feel after you publish a new book?” “How much time a day do you spend writing?” “How do you come up with the endings to your books? And more! If you or your student are interested in checking out either of the McMann’s book series, they are available in the Graland Library. Happy reading!
