Grade 8: Mi Carrito de Comida

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month this October, eighth-grade students created food trucks in Spanish class showcasing the cuisine and culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
This culminating activity is part of a restaurant unit for Grade 8 Spanish students, in which they learn how to order food or beverages at a restaurant, identify eating utensils and dishes, compare foods, make a restaurant reservation, talk about past and present events, and discover various cuisines of the Hispanic world.

Throughout the unit, in addition to building their food trucks, students made videos on how to set a table, read an article about various recipes from Spanish-speaking countries, chose three countries to learn more about their food and traditions, selected a dish to research the main ingredients, and presented their findings to the class. As part of their final assessment, the eighth graders built and decorated food trucks, which included a menu with at least three dishes, prices in local currency, a description of their country and their dishes, and a final oral presentation. Students visited all three Spanish classrooms to view each other's work and were prepared to ask and answer questions in Spanish about their projects. Some students even brought food to sample!
