Learning Through History: Mizel Museum Sessions Build Foundation for Grade 7 D.C. Trip

Before departing for their Washington, D.C., trip, seventh graders took part in a special history program designed to build foundational knowledge ahead of their visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Over several days, students participated in a series of sessions led by an educator from the Mizel Museum.
Through discussion, reflection questions, visual analysis, and recorded interviews with Holocaust survivors, students explored key themes related to the Holocaust. They watched interviews such as “Paula Burger: A Young Girl Among the Bielski Partisans” and “Rudi Florian: Propaganda and Personal Responsibility,” gaining personal insights into resistance, survival, and the effects of propaganda.

The sessions helped students build a deeper understanding of the historical context of the Holocaust, the experiences of individuals who lived through it, and the importance of standing up against injustice. With this foundation, students were better prepared to connect meaningfully with the exhibits they would soon experience in Washington, D.C.
