Members of the 5/6 Service Council met with a representative of Freedom Service Dogs of America this week to find out how they can help this organization with its mission. “Service council is a group that choses an organization to help and to raise awareness,” explains co-leader Charlotte Frampton, Grade 6. “Freedom Service Dogs of America rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to help veterans and people with disabilities.”

The visitor was accompanied by one of the dogs in training. “On Monday, I learned that they don’t train dogs to do tricks,” Charlotte says. “The dogs learn to do things like turn off lights, close doors, pull laundry baskets, and help someone stand up.”

After the presentation, council members had a better idea of the organization's goals. “I learned how they started their organization and who they help,” shares Mahalia Endsley, Grade 5. “We also found out what supplies they need.”

The Service Council is now dedicated to providing toys, leashes and food. They are planning to sell snacks at an upcoming 5/6 social to raise money and are organizing a drive to collect dog toys and treats.

Before deciding on Freedom Service Dogs of America, council members discussed various causes and cast votes to decide what the focus would be this year. They agreed on animals and people, which are the two groups served by Freedom Service Dogs of America.
