Grade 6: Discovering the Power of Numbers

Sixth graders in Mrs. Jolene Collier’s math class recently brought mathematics to life through the number exploration project, an inquiry-based unit that encouraged them to uncover the stories hidden in data all around them. Each student selected a topic of personal interest that involved numbers in some way, ranging from sports statistics and music to population growth and weather trends.
After choosing their topics, students developed guiding questions to focus their research and gathered information from reliable sources, studying existing charts, graphs, and tables. They analyzed their findings to identify patterns, trends, and relationships before creating their own visual representations to illustrate what they had learned.

The project concluded with classroom presentations, where students shared their discoveries and taught their peers how numbers shape the world from the rhythm of a song to the temperature outside. Through this project, sixth graders strengthened their research, data analysis, and presentation skills, proving that math isn’t just about solving problems, but about understanding the fascinating ways numbers connect to everyday life.
